University College London Hospitals, Bloomsbury Ward

The Bloomsbury Private Ward at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, London was in need of a major refurbishment and modernisation programme. The hospital found the current ward’s layout was not working, had accessibility issues and desired a higher standard of finish.

The ward needed to be completely remodelled, with the needs of patients and staff at the centre of the design. The project consisted of much needed general improvements to the wards infrastructure, including a complete refurbishment of all 17 bedrooms and a redesign of the bathrooms, to make them more accessible for patients.

Through early engagement with the client, ITC discovered there was a long lead time from the manufacturer of the Area Valve Service Unit (AVSU), which provides local isolation of individual parts of medical gases.

Identifying the issue at tender stage, meant that the team were able to provide a solution, to eliminate a delay to the programme from the outset.

The finished spaces have been completed in accordance with the latest healthcare buildings advice and guidance, and finished to the highest possible standards of safety and comfort.

The project was delivered on a New Engineering Contract, applying good project management principles and practice.
