The Challenge: Honouring Historic Intent at Dulwich College
The Barry Building at Dulwich College is a pivotal piece of 19th-century architecture, holding Grade II* listed status. The College’s goal for its refurbishment was not merely to renovate, but to return the building to its original design intent while ensuring its functionality met the demanding standards of a modern educational institution.
The project required an exceptionally sensitive approach, balancing the meticulous preservation of priceless historic finishes with the discreet integration of modern services and systems. This complex restoration was executed in collaboration with Quantem and Alma-nac Architects, whose expertise in heritage and conservation was central to the vision.

Our Solution for Dulwich College’s Barry Building: Meticulous Research and Restoration
Working hand-in-hand with conservation specialists and the College’s heritage team, Alma-nac undertook careful research into the building’s historical palette, materials, and detailing. This informed every decision, ensuring that the refurbishment respected the building’s deep cultural significance.
Preservation of Historic Finishes
The restoration focused on key interiors, including the Master’s Library, the Master’s Board Room, and the Grand Lower Hall. Our team dedicated significant effort to the careful conservation and restoration of original architectural features. Finishes and colours were meticulously specified to reflect the building’s original character while simultaneously meeting modern performance and durability standards. This process ensured the continued integrity and unique character of Dulwich College’s heritage interiors.

Seamless Integration of Modern Systems
A key component of the project involved the discreet integration of new services and lighting. New materials and building systems were introduced, all designed to align sensitively with the building’s historic fabric and meet current operational performance requirements. The full coordination and installation of new lighting throughout the building was specifically designed to highlight the craftsmanship, finishes, and architectural detailing of the restored spaces without compromising the historical aesthetic.
Results: Preserving Heritage on a Tight Schedule
The project successfully delivered a refurbished Barry Building that seamlessly fuses its architectural legacy with its current role as a living part of the College.
